Can You Crack It? The Overlooked Netherlands Invention That Shaped our Modern World

There are numerous contenders to claim the designation as “planet’s most significant invention.” The circular axle. The movable type. The steam engine.

According to a recent publication, however, that title should go to a mechanised timber mill invented through Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.

“Before automated cutting, constructing a modest trading ship required around ten lumberjacks working over 90 days,” writes the author. “With wind-powered lumber mills, the same amount of processed timber might be manufactured in less than seven days.”

Owing to their rapid automated cutter, which turned timber to boards using virtually no manual labor, Dutch builders were able to construct vessels faster than anyone else, an advantage that sparked one hundred years of Dutch maritime, economic and cultural supremacy across Europe and the globe.

The Original True Manufacturing Device

The inventor's sawmill, contends the writer, was “humanity’s first true factory apparatus.” A windmill rotated a gear. One component transformed the circular motion into up-and-down motion for the cutting blade. Another component transformed the spinning movement into a lateral motion advancing the log to the blade. A geared mechanism moved the wood forward a measured step per cycle.

“Every component was simple on its own. Corneliszoon’s brilliance lay in how to integrate these parts so they operated within a precisely synchronized order, sawing with each downward stroke while moving with each return motion. It was a remarkably clever application of basic parts.”

Circular to Vertical

Construct a mechanism which converts circular movement into vertical action. Your available these components exclusively: A rotating disc. Two pins. Two bars. A “sleeve”, that is a cylinder or sleeve through which a single the bars can slide snugly. (Assume you can mount components on a base, so that the components do not collapse.)
