Crew Member Shares Depression Following ‘Tsunami of Harassment Following Journey
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also featured high-profile passengers.
The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a social media post, referring to a check-in call from a mission companion in the period after the flight.
She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and performed experiments during the flight, said everything she had worked for – including her lab work and astronaut training to the historic significance of her roots – was overshadowed under the tide of misogyny.
She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of survivors of assault.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
Finding Solid Ground
Months following reaching space, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the followers whose support helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.
She noted that despite the negativity, important benefits had come out of the experience, such as spotlight on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
About the Mission
The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket lifted off from Texas in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that passed the edge of space.
The group of women also featured accomplished professionals from various fields.
The venture behind the flight is a private space firm founded by a Amazon founder.
